Want to be sure of a smile this summer? Best you head for the Garden Route, and the friendliest town in South Africa (www.plettenbergbay.com).
That's according to kulula.com, whose Friendliest Destinations survey says that the warmest holiday welcome in SA is to be found in Plettenberg Bay. Via its kulula Holidays Site, kulula.com surveyed over 1500 people from across the country. Fans were asked to vote for their favorite friendliest holiday destination from a list of 40 destinations across South Africa.
The researchers used the highly scientific "Smile/Scowl" Ratio Method to gather results by walking along the busy main road of each destination and noting spontaneous and returned smiles of passersby. Five points were awarded to the destination when locals spontaneously smiled; two points were awarded when our researchers smiled and received return stunners.
"No-one wants to holiday with a bunch of sad sacks, so we're helping South Africans pick the happiest destinations to visit in the summer. In our business we've learned that friendly staff is critical to keep people coming back - it's exactly the same for summer holiday destinations," says kulula.com Marketing Manager, Nadine Damen.

South Africa was named "Africa, Indian Ocean and Gulf States Golf Destination of the Year 2011" by the International Assoc of Golf Tour Operators: The announcement was made in at the annual international awards ceremony for the golf tourism industry. South African Tourism's UK Country Manager, Lebo Mokhesi, said: "With over 600 golf courses providing every type and level of golf experience, we are proud to be announced as winners of this prestigious award. This is a significant acknowledgement by IAGTO that South Africa is fast becoming an irresistible golfing destination for golfers of all abilities across the world, as well as one of the most diversely appealing destinations on the planet."
