Wine Estates in Plettenberg BayHiking in Plettenberg BayDining In Plettenberg Bay

Plett Wine Growers Association

Plettenberg Bay was named a South African “Wine of Origin Region” in 2005 by the South Africa Wine Industry.

Wine grapes were first introduced to Plettenberg Bay in 2000 at Bramon Wine Estate in the Crags, a mere 10 minutes from Plett Central. They discovered that the local climate and soil conditions were perfect for developing the character winemakers respect.

The 16 producing vineyards in Plettenberg Bay surrounds are set at the base of the Tsitsikamma Mountains, on the edge of indigenous forests, overlooking sweeping views of the Indian Ocean. Our picturesque vineyards and wine farms beckon you to visit.

Tours of these vineyards are generally by appointment only. Organise your visit with a registered tour operator; who will take you to one or several of our local vineyards. Wine tastings, light snacks, picnic lunches, dining amongst the vines and hi-tea options are all available. Click here www.plettwinelands.com to sign up for the Plett Winelands newsletter or for additional information about the different wine events and farms in Plettenberg Bay.

Did you know?
  • There are 16 estates; Bramon Estates produces some 80 000 bottles per annum and assists other estates with producing 100 000 bottles per annum.
  • Most are producing Sauvignon Blanc and Bubbly – and the quality is considered to be on a par with that produced in New Zealand’s world renowned Marlborough estates.
  • Several estates are investing, or planning to invest, in new vineyards and wine cellars.
  • You can book to taste wine at most of the estates.
  • You can ride horses or hike between some estates – Bramon, Newstead Estates and Anderson Wines link with lodges such as Hogs Hollow and Tamodi.
  • We hope by the time you return next year we will have a Plett Winelands Store selling the best of the region under one roof.
  • We are also looking at integrating the emerging Plett Winelands with home industry products, township tours, farm tours, restaurants, lodges, B&B’s, and hiking, mountain bike and horse trails.

Anderson's Wine - Proudly...Origin of Plettenberg Bay
Overlooking Keurboomstrand and Robberg Peninsula, the Anderson vineyard is delicately layered with a gradual flow between fynbos and indigenous forest and enjoys a mild cool breeze from the Indian Ocean. Located in the area ‘Keurbooms Heights’ east of Plett, the farm is blessed with astounding ocean and mountain views. The farm is home to local wildlife including caracal, bush pig and bush buck. From the call of the African Fish Eagle in the valley to the famous Knysna Turaco, this is a natural haven. The Anderson trademark, the Letovenus moth - commonly known as the Silver-spotted ghost moth or Keurboom moth, is found in the bark of the plentiful lKeurboom trees found on this beautiful farm...so the name came to be.

It was a great passion for wine and viticulture that started the vineyards in 2007. The project was started by Bruce Anderson, a family friend not related to Ian Anderson, and owner of the farm, Pine Haven. The farm of 109 hectares was bought by Ian and his father in 1972. An area of three hectares on the western side of the farm was transformed to vineyards, just below a picturesque dam. Bruce and Ian worked together as partners until 2012, when Bruce decided to withdraw from the project. Ian continues to look after and run the business.

The first bottling was in 2011, and most recently the 2013 wine was bottled at the end of July. This flavoursome Sauvignon Blanc has nuances of grapefruit and lime fruit with tones of green melon and passion fruit on the nose. The wine is processed and bottled at Bramon Cellar by local wine maker Anton Smal. Wine tasting and sales by appointment only.

Plettenvale Wines - Our passion is wine
Plettenvale Boutique wines are hand crafted with careful attention to detail, producing wines of excellent quality. The estate includes approximately 3000 Pinot Noir and 3000 Chardonnay vines and about 350 Syrah vines. Vines were planted in 2008 and they enjoyed their first, but very small, harvest in 2011. Having matured into a fine estate, they now produce 10000 bottles of wine each year. Their main focus is on the beautiful Brut Rosé MCC, the balance spread between Dry Rosé, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah. IN 2015 they will add a Chardonnay Blanc de Blanc MCC to their range. We are assisted by award winning wine maker Anton Smal in our wine making and by Paul Wallace renowned viticulture expert in our vineyards.

Taking extreme pride with the delicate flavours and quality of their wines, it was inevitable that visitors would enjoy the selection. As one English gentleman recently remarked, “In my opinion Plettenvale’s Dry Rosé is up there with the best in the world."

Wine Tasting
We will be opening our cellar every Saturday morning from 9 am to 1 pm for wine tasting and wine sales at cellar prices. Other times are by appointment. Cheese and wine pairing/tasting can be booked for parties. We are near the Plett airport, just 10 minutes from town.

RE Vineyards
The award winning RE Vineyards are nestled in the heart of the picturesque PlettWinelands. This magnificent vineyard, originally a Protea farm, was purchased by Chick Legh in 2004 and incorporated into his neighbouring farm, Rondebosch. Combined, the farms form an impressive 220 hectare working polo farm and vineyard. The original farm house, aptly named Rare Earth Country House, has been converted into luxury accommodation whilst maintaining its authenticity.

The vineyards roll across five hectares of resplendent hills, beyond which lies the breath taking mountainous terrain of the Keurboom's River Nature Reserve and Forestry. The vineyards currently produce three varietals namely Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

This is one of Plett’s newest wines, watch this space!

Redford Lane Wines - It's a lifestyle
Redford Lane Wines, at the far end of Redford Road in The Crags 20km east of Plett, was established in 2006. Says owner Leanne Lane, “With my husband Brendan and I managing the vineyard personally we gain a far greater insight into the intricacies of the winemaking process”.

Anton Smal, winemaker in The Crags and resident at Bramon Wine Estate, has twenty-odd years at Villiera Wines under his belt - a wealth of invaluable industry experience. Originally from George, Anton grabbed the opportunity to return to the Garden Route to pursue his passion.

Redford Lane Wines is a small, boutique producer with one hectare currently under young Sauvignon Blanc vines. Their philosophy is a simple and passionate one - creating a particularly easy drinking, refreshing white wine soft on the palate, light in colour carrying notes of ripe melon, a hint of pineapple, floral tones, and with a light lime undertone finish. Other varieties include a red blend, white blend and a copper MCC.

Don’t miss this appetising new wine, a testament to Plett’s amazing new winelands.

Tasting
Redford Lane Wines now has a tasting room and will be open Thursday – Sunday.

Newstead - Lund Family Vineyards
“Honesty, surprise, delight… that’s what we want from our wines, and from life.”
- Doug and Sue Lund

At Newstead we believe that small is special. We know and nurture each vine. We use organic fertilisers. We pay meticulous attention to detail. And we prioritise quality over quantity, so we don’t cut costs, even taking the unusual step of using netting over our vines, because it results in unusually good grapes: they’re some of the most unblemished any farmer is ever likely to see, and they’re put to good use by our award-winning winemaker, Anton Small. Our salubrious vines are the source of delicious wines. We like to savour and slowly sip our Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and French method Cap Classique Brut and Rose Bubblies, but don’t always succeed.

Our tasting room is very much the way we hope people will think of our farm: welcoming, authentic, intimate. It’s a place we want visitors to be able relax and linger. Like a home, it will evolve, change, and hopefully surprise, depending on the time of day or year. We won’t have restaurant-like formalities, but we will serve foods that are guided by the season, inspired by our mood, made from scratch using ingredients that are locally-sourced (often as local as our own vegetable, herb and flower garden, and bread from our oven). It’s always fresh, simple and delicious. We’re open by appointment throughout the year. Or take a chance and just pop in. Wine delivered country wide. For tastings, orders & bookings
